Grade 1 Music Course (Term 1)

About Course
Grade 1 Music Course (Term 1) – Singing, Playing, and Celebrating India Through Music!
In the Grade 1 Music Course (Term 1), kids are trained extensively to use the Kodaly Hand symbols while singing the seven notes. Thus, the pitches and their levels are set firmly in their minds through constant reinforcement across the lessons. Building on rhythm reading skills developed in the LKG and UKG levels, students are now introduced to the musical Staff for pitch reading, i.e., sight singing. By breaking down a musical line into individual measures, students can better understand the movement of pitches—upward or downward—based on their prior training with the Kodaly Hand symbols.
This grade 1 music course also introduces the concept of patriotism through the song Saare Jahan Se Acha (The National Song of India), with context set by exploring India’s beautiful landscapes. Children are introduced to the concept of Rests (silence in music), two new classroom instruments, and their unique sounds. The idea of soft and loud singing is revisited. Students also learn whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes through animation.
As part of the grade 1 music course, the concept of instrumental timbre is introduced by listening for instruments in a recorded film song. Children also participate in a movement activity, allowing them to express music physically. An Onam song is taught to enrich their cultural repertoire and provide a deeper connection to Indian traditions.
