Hindustani Vocals Degree Course (Level 5)

About Course
Hindustani Music – Level 5 | Deepening Expression through Madhyalay & Raga Craft
In this level, students are introduced to Madhyalay, the medium tempo that forms the core of many classical bandishes and improvisational sections in Hindustani music. Key taals in Madhyalay – Jhaptaal, Roopak, and Addha Teentaal are studied in detail, with a focus on their structure, theka, and how they support vocal phrasing.
Students learn bandishes in Jhaptaal in two familiar ragas, using pre-designed raaga vistaar to guide melodic development and strengthen their sense of structure. Introductory alaaps are created to build phrasing skills and to lay the foundation for improvisation. Attention is given to the originality and composition of improvisational material, ensuring that students maintain logical flow, coherence, and strict adherence to raga principles. This level emphasizes on the performance as well as the internalization of Madhyalay as an expressive space.
