About Course

Hindustani Music – Level 7 | Exploring Classical Influences in Thumri, Bhajans & Bollywood

This 9-week course is designed for intermediate-level students of Hindustani music who have a foundational understanding of ragas, taals, and the structure of classical compositions like Khayal. It explores how the rich grammar of Hindustani classical music has influenced semi-classical forms such as Thumri, Dadra, and Kajri, devotional music like bhajans, and mainstream Bollywood songs.

Through a combination of listening, singing, analysis, and creative exploration, students will learn to recognize classical elements in diverse musical contexts, understand the stylistic nuances of each genre, and perform select pieces from each. The course encourages artistic expression while grounding students in raga aesthetics, enabling them to sing or interpret music across these forms with authenticity and awareness. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify and present classical influences in both traditional and popular music.
