Hindustani Music – Level 8 | Understand Gharana Style & Form

In this level, students are introduced to the concept of Gharanas in Hindustani classical music, learning about the key stylistic differences and some well-known artistes associated with each tradition. The focus is also on developing music appreciation skills, including what to observe in a raga performance, such as the types of bandishes used and the overall flow of the presentation. Students listen to recordings by experienced gurus to better understand how a raga is developed and presented.

 As part of their practice, they begin creating simple alaaps and half-avartan taans in Raga Des, helping them explore melodic expression in a structured way. They also work on identifying different sections of a raga performance by ear and learn to present taans in different speeds while keeping the raga clear and consistent.
